Department: Adult and Community Learning
Reporting to: Curriculum Team Leader in Adult & Community Learning
Annual Leave: 45 days per annum plus statutory Bank Holidays (pro rata)
Contractual hours: 22.2 hours per week
Teaching hours: 518.4 hours per annum
Basis: Part time, Permanent

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lecturer in Maths to join our Adult and Community Learning team. This department provides essential basic skills, vocational training, and upskilling opportunities for individuals who are unemployed or on a low income, helping to address skills gaps identified within the Tees Valley area. Many adult learners have been out of education for several years. The department offers Functional Skills, GCSEs, ESOL, Distance Learning (DL), Bootcamps, and a small provision for 16–18-year-olds. Additionally, it provides vocational training in key areas where support is needed to fill recruitment vacancies (BELPS). Following an OFSTED inspection, the department was rated 'Outstanding'. ACL has continued to expand year on year, supporting the wider community. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to an inclusive and engaging learning environment, empowering students to fulfil their potential while playing a key role in a thriving academic community.
What You’ll Be Doing:
As a Lecturer in Maths, you will:
- Plan a comprehensive programme of study that accommodates the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
- Establish a classroom environment that fosters engagement and is suited to students' developmental stages and interests.
- Provide academic and pastoral support, empowering students to realise their full potential.
- Develop and implement lesson plans that connect theoretical concepts to practical, real-world applications.
- Collaborate with colleagues to enhance the learning experience and ensure all students’ needs are met.
- Support student recruitment, retention, achievement, and progression through tailored guidance and encouragement.
What We’re Looking For:
We seek candidates who:
- Are a qualified teacher or willing to work towards qualification**
- Hold a degree in Mathematics or a related subject – Essential
- Have GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above in English and Maths, or an equivalent qualification
- Have experience teaching GCSE Mathematics in a school or further education setting, with a proven track record in delivering exam-based qualifications (Functional Skills - Desirable)
- Have experience providing pastoral support, such as personal tutoring or wellbeing support for learners – Desirable

*The Lecturer Salary Scale is from Pt 5 – Pt 16. The salary progression criteria beyond point 11 of the Lecturer scale will be based on you achieving and maintaining, on an annual basis, the Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) or QTS. To progress beyond point 14 of the Lecturer salary scale, you will be expected to achieve and maintain the Advanced Teacher Status (ATS).
